Johnny began his musical career at the age of 10 playing guitar. Two years later he switched to bass guitar and settled into keyboards at the age of 15. While in high school he studied privately with the head of the opera department at SMU to help develop his vocal skills in addition to private jazz piano studies at Cedar Valley College with jazz great Russ Benzamin.

After high school Johnny spent a short time studying music at North Texas State University, highly acclaimed for its jazz program and Grammy Award winning 1:00 Lab Band, and then left to spend most of the seventies touring the United States with various rock acts.

Johnny returned to Dallas in 1978 and built his first recording studio while continuing to perform live with numerous bands. In 1981 he managed the development of the largest music recording/audio post-production facility in the Southwest. There he hosted a number of world-renowned artists such as Phil Collins, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Elton John, Pantera, and ZZ Top, hit television shows such as Northern Exposure and Quantum Leap, and numerous feature films including Steve Martin’s Leap of Faith. Through the eighties and nineties Johnny earned three Gold Records, three Platinum Records, two Double Platinum Records, one Quadruple Platinum Record, the Vision Award for Television Excellence, and the International Monitor Award.

In 1996 he created Marshall Sound Design to provide boutique style audio editorial services for independent films.

Johnny was awarded the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Sound Design at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival and was nominated in the 2013 London Critics Circle Film Awards for Technical Achievement of the Year for his sound design on UPSTREAM COLOR. In 2022 Johnny received the nomination for BEST SOUND in the IRISH FILM AND DRAMA AWARDS, also known as the "Irish Oscars", for his sound design on David Lowery’s THE GREEN KNIGHT.
